New Lead Where Your Roof Needs It
Proper sheet lead, cut to fit. Every joint where water could get in: chimney aprons, valleys, wall flashings, soakers and the small roofs over your bays and dormers, each shaped to your house.
Renewed, not covered in sealant. Mastic over split lead only lasts a season or two. We replace the failed lead on your roof instead.
Start with a free roof check. Every join on your roof gets inspected and you hear which ones have failed. Call 01803 446 106.
Your roof
A Leak That Will Not Go Away?
It has been sealed, and it still comes back. The damp shows beside your chimney, below a dormer or along the wall where your extension meets the house. It appears after heavy rain and dries out again. Sealant and flashing tape have not cured it.
New lead is normally the cure. We track down the join on your roof that has let go and replace it. The lead jobs we handle for you:
- Chimney flashings - the stepped lead and front apron around your stack renewed.
- Abutment flashings - fresh lead along the line where a slope butts against brickwork.
- Lead valleys - the channel between two of your roof slopes relined when it has split or thinned.
- Soakers - the hidden pieces of lead under slates or tiles at a wall, replaced along with the flashing.
- Bay and dormer roofs - the little lead tops over bays and dormers stripped and laid again in correctly sized pieces.
- Box gutters - lead-lined gutters hidden behind a wall, relined when they leak.
What you get from us
What You Get From Our Leadwork
The Correct Thickness
Your lead is the weight the job calls for, usually code 4 or code 5.
Lengths That Can Move
Lead expands and contracts with the weather. Yours is fitted in lengths that allow for that, which is what stops it cracking.
Tidy, Visible Work
Your lead is dressed close to the roof and set into the wall, so it looks neat from the road.

What to look for
Where Lead Fails On A Roof
Lead is fitted wherever two surfaces meet. Those joins are the weak spots on any roof. If your leak is close to one of these, the lead is the likely cause, and we can renew it.
- Next to the chimney - damp on your chimney breast or on the ceiling beside it.
- Where the extension joins the house - a mark along your wall just below the join.
- Beneath a dormer - staining on your loft room ceiling or around the dormer window.
- Under a valley - a leak following the line where two of your roof slopes meet.
- Above a bay window - damp in your bay ceiling, under its little lead or slate roof.
- Behind a wall at the roof edge - damp near the top of an outside wall, under a hidden gutter.
Does your leak match one of these? Ring 01803 446 106 to have those joins on your roof looked at without charge.
Common questions
Leadwork Questions
Lead swells in the heat and shrinks in the cold. A length that is too long, or fixed too tightly, cannot move and eventually splits. The lasting answer is new lead in shorter lengths with proper laps, not sealant over the crack.
One small tear in good lead is sometimes worth repairing. Once it is thin, cracked in more than one spot or pulling out of the brickwork, new lead is the better buy. The free roof check settles it.
There are lead-free flashing products, and they have their place. Correctly fitted lead lasts much longer, and on an older house it is usually the right choice. We will tell you what we would use on your roof, and why.
Lead that is the right size and properly fitted commonly lasts for decades. When lead fails early, it is usually because it went on in pieces that were too big, not because the lead wore out.
Lead creeps slightly with each hot day and cold night. Mastic and tape are too stiff to follow it, so they split or lift and water finds its way back in. Replacing the lead is what lasts.
If it is still in good shape it can often be dressed back into place. Thin, torn or undersized pieces get swapped for new sheet, and you will know which yours are.
A soaker is a small piece of lead slipped under each slate or tile where the roof meets a wall. You never see them, but with the flashing over the top they keep that join dry.
